Impact

Striking parts of the body with a hand or implement — usually the butt, thighs, back, or chest. Spanking, flogging, paddling, caning, crops, belts.

Impact play is the second-most-common entry into kink, after restraint. The appeal is partly the sensation — endorphins, contrast, heat — and partly the dynamic: someone choosing to give it, someone choosing to receive it, both staying very present with each other in the process.

What it looks like across the spectrum

  • Spanking — hand on butt or thighs. The classic entry point.
  • Body slaps — open hand on fleshy areas (butt, thighs, breasts, chest). Skip bony and organ-protecting areas.
  • Flogging — multi-tailed flogger. Sensation ranges from thuddy and warm to sharp depending on the tails.
  • Paddling — wood, leather, or silicone paddle. Heavier and thuddier than a hand.
  • Crops — quick, stingy, narrow impact.
  • Belt — broad and thuddy. Watch the buckle.
  • Caning — thin rattan cane. Sharp, focused, intense. Typically for experienced bottoms.

Where to hit and where not to

  • Yes: butt, upper thighs, the meaty parts of the back below the shoulder blades, sometimes the chest.
  • No: lower back (kidneys), spine, neck, the front of the chest over the heart, joints, head.
  • Build up. Start light, watch how the bottom responds, escalate slowly. Bruising the first time is usually a sign someone went too hard too fast.

Negotiating an impact scene

  • What implements are on the table?
  • How hard, on a scale you both share? (Many couples use 1–10.)
  • Where on the body — and where is off-limits?
  • Marks: okay, not okay, only places clothes will cover?
  • Safeword that ends everything. Slow word that pauses or dials it back.
  • What does aftercare look like — for both of you. The person giving impact often needs decompression too.

Common pitfalls

  • Confusing 'still consenting' with 'still enjoying'. Check in.
  • Hitting bony or organ-protecting areas because you couldn't see clearly.
  • Going harder than negotiated because the bottom 'seems into it'.
  • Skipping aftercare on the top side. Giving an intense scene is also a lot to come down from.
