Sensation & intensity

Vanilla

Prefers familiar, conventional intimacy.

Vanilla, in this taxonomy, just means a preference for familiar, conventional intimacy. There is nothing less valid, less interesting, or less erotic about it. The label gets used dismissively in some communities; that says more about the communities than about the preference.

What it actually looks like

  • Finding deep satisfaction in a fairly stable repertoire with a trusted partner.
  • Preferring depth over novelty.
  • Not feeling drawn to the more elaborate dynamics in the rest of this glossary — and that being a real answer, not a gap.

What it isn't

  • Not boring. Familiar can be extraordinarily intense with the right person.
  • Not closed off. Many Vanilla-leaning people are happy to try things occasionally; "vanilla" describes the steady-state, not the ceiling.
  • Not naivety. You can have read everything in the library and still prefer the simpler menu.

Where it shows up well

Pairs comfortably with Sensual, Romantic, Monogamist tendencies and with anyone who doesn't treat "vanilla" as a verdict. Mixed pairings (Vanilla + Experimenter) work when both can hear "not for me" without taking it as rejection.

Common pitfalls

  • Performing more adventurousness than you want because you're worried about being judged.
  • Letting a more-experimental partner set the cadence by default.
  • Reading your own preference as something to grow out of.
